In a world that constantly tells us to move faster, do more, and check things off the list, there’s something incredibly meaningful about slowing down, especially when it comes to documenting your family portraits. Capturing genuine family moments is hard to do when you are rushing through the session, trying to capture shots quickly. To get meaningful family images, it’s about letting the moment happen. The beauty in relaxed family sessions is that it takes off the pressure to perform and allows families to simply enjoy each other. In these moments, I act as a fly on the wall capturing all the sweet, authentic family moments as they unfold.
Parents everywhere will agree that kids don’t run on a timeline, and they’re not meant to. They don’t arrive ready to perform or pose perfectly on cue, nor should they. Children often need a little time to warm up, feel safe, and explore their surroundings. This is not only normal, but completely welcomed! When kids are allowed to just be themselves and the pressure is removed, that is when the most beautiful and treasured images are captured.
When there is no rushing or pressure, everything shifts and kids begin to play freely, explore their environment, laugh and interact without being asked, and come back to you naturally. It is in these candid moments that we capture what actually feels like your family.
Of course, I’ll gently guide you when needed. But the goal is never to over-direct or force moments into place. Instead, we create space for your kids to be themselves, run and play, for you to interact with them the way you always do, and allow real moments of connection to occur.
I know many parents come to a session hoping their kids behave and that everyone smiles and keeps their clothes clean. Some parents get stressed or worry that their kids won’t cooperate, but I am here to tell you that none of that matters. I will always put you and your children’s comfort and safety first and follow their lead.
Perfection isn’t the goal; it’s connection. I want to capture real moments between your family. The way your faces light up as you look at one another, your child mid-giggle as they run around you, the way your arms open wide to embrace them when they turn to run back to you, and the squeals of delight as they explore their surroundings. . . These are the moments that matter and the memories you’ll treasure forever, not the perfectly posed or forced moments.
When a session is un-rushed and relaxed, your gallery becomes more than a collection of images. Instead, it becomes a reflection of your family as you truly are in this season of life. Relaxed family sessions allow you to slow down and enjoy the moment instead of rushing through it. It becomes a moment of connection and not a forced experience. It’s okay if it looks a little messy, because those playful genuine moments represent all the love that surrounds your family. Years from now when you look back through your family albums, those are the photos that will mean the most
