Summer is one of the most popular seasons for engagement sessions, and for good reason. The longer evenings, lush greenery, and warm golden light create the perfect backdrop for romantic photographs. Here in Tennessee, everything feels alive during the summer months, making it an especially beautiful time to celebrate this milestone in your relationship. Couples often wonder what they should wear to a summer engagement session. The good news is that it doesn’t need to be complicated or stressful. The best outfits are those that feel comfortable, photograph beautifully, and reflect who you are as a couple. Here are a few of my summer engagement outfit tips to help you plan!

Summer sessions can be hot, especially in Tennessee, which is why breathable fabrics are key. Think lightweight fabrics like linen, cotton, silk blends, and flowy materials that will help you stay cool AND photograph beautifully. Long, flowy dresses add movement and softness to your images, while linen shirts or suits create a polished yet effortless look.
However, shorter dresses like a knee-length dress can feel playful, relaxed, and perfect for a casual summer session. The more comfortable you are, the more you’ll be able to focus on each other instead of the temperature.

Summer landscapes are filled with vibrant greens and colorful blooms. Your outfits can complement that setting without competing with it.
Soft blues are one of my favorite choices because they pair beautifully with Tennessee’s summer scenery while still feeling timeless. Neutrals will always be a classic, safe option. However, adding a pop of color, if it feels like you, is a great way to include a little personality.

Think about where your engagement session is taking place. A venue like Cheekwood Estate & Gardens lends itself beautifully to romantic dresses and elevated attire, while an open field or countryside location may feel more natural with relaxed, flowing, or casual pieces.
Also don’t be afraid to get creative. Nothing says summer like a pool engagement session. I love the idea of incorporating the season in this way! Imagine spending the evening by the pool in swimsuits, sharing a cocktail, floating in the water, or lounging poolside together. What could be better?
I love when couples decide to do something different like a poolside session, grabbing ice cream downtown, sharing a picnic in the park, riding bikes through your favorite neighborhood, or enjoying a sunset on the lake. These locations embrace the summer season and result in joyful images that are unique to you.

One of my favorite ways to add variety to an engagement gallery, regardless of the season, is by bringing two different looks. I typically suggest one outfit that is slightly dressier for a classic, elegant feel, and then a more relaxed, casual outfit for your second outfit.
This gives your gallery two distinct looks while still feeling cohesive, and we can pair the looks with the location that will work best for each.

I always encourage couples to select clothing that reflects their personalities, allows them to move comfortably, and complements each other and the location. Whether we’re exploring the gardens at Cheekwood Estate, wandering through downtown Nashville, or creating something completely unique like a poolside session, your engagement photos should tell your story. Years from now, I want you to look back on these images and remember not just what you wore, but how you felt during this exciting season of your lives.
